EMERGING 2020 PERFORMANCE & LAND ART

#EMERGING This series is a collaborative project between performance artist @vittoriacolonnastudio and fine art photographer @danielholfeld.

The work is a semiotic response to the lockdown restrictions imposed during the Covid 19 pandemic and presents a transformative narrative with variables of body and movement, light and space. The artists strive to produce pieces that are potent and affecting, posing multiple questions rather than providing a single answer.

Their combined practice is a meditation on the nomadic experience of “being” and taps in to the unconscious, juxtaposed against serene and ephemeral settings to experiment with the contrasting elements of inclusion and exclusion, real and unreal, settled and nomadic.

Using a shroud of dark navy fabric as a metaphor for the collectively shared lockdown experience, the face of the female figure is not often visible. It is also unclear whether what we see is a frozen moment from an unfolding series of events, waiting to be awakened from a long sleep or if the figure balances on a thin line between the fragile and destructive; the playful and the tragic. Body parts rather than a whole figure slowly emerge to reveal or give birth to a creature with its own life and will.

COSMIC CLOWNING - POMPUCCIOS - BODY ART

Filmed in Gallery Tomo, two artists make living art. Humans existence is only but a dot on the canvas, a moment in time, a breath, a memory, a mark. Delving into the meaning of their existence, two artists Miki Yokoyama (Japan) and Vittoria Colonna (Italy & Ireland) will collaborate in an experimental performance art piece where both women will become each others living self portraits. These two women will mould into each other, becoming a living and working installation; The M&V experience... where the inside is revealed to the outside. The performance will consist of the artists painting each other in real time, using ink, paint, wool, yarn, elaborate costumes, voice and pom poms. Guest Performance by Butoh artist Iori Kinki. The performance art pieces from the film were selected by the Italian Cultural Minster as part of the Worldwide Italian Pavilion & 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2011. Identities is a sensitive and compelling documentary which explores the multicoloured, multicultural transgender community in Ireland. Five personal stories give shape to the different but parallel worlds of Transvestism, Transsexualism, Drag, Sexual identity, and Gender Dysphoria. Intimate observational footage introduces us to the world of each character. Documented in a series of revealing black and white interviews, each narrative is preceded by a colour performance art piece, and more abstract self-representation. Personal histories charting hardship, rejection and discrimination will be placed in a wider social, political and religious context through these characters' personal experiences. At its heart, this is a film about the human spirit. Overcoming stereotype and categorisation, the gender construct breaks open, allowing personality and human emotion a path to expression.
